Backup and disaster recovery
A backup is a copy. Recovery is a plan.
Data is essential to the health of a business, and CamTech specialises in making sure yours is protected and recoverable. That means two separate things. Backup is the copy: image backups of whole systems and data backups of files, databases and mailboxes, taken at essential daily intervals and stored both locally and off site. Disaster recovery is the plan: which systems come back first, where they run while the office is dark, who does what, and how long the business is down.
Most businesses have the first and not the second. They have a backup somebody set up years ago, running to a drive that may or may not still be plugged in, and nobody has ever tried to restore from it. CamTech develops multiple points of protection designed for your business and your data, and then tests them, because a backup that has never been restored is a hope rather than a plan.
Ransomware changed what a backup has to survive. An attacker who gets into a network looks for the backups first, so CamTech keeps copies the attacker cannot reach: off site, separated from the production network, and protected against deletion. Losing passwords, account numbers and years of records could put a business and its profits at major risk; the point of this service is that it never comes to that.
When it happens
Easier, streamlined, and much more secure
When a server fails or a file is deleted, you call the support line and the restore starts. For a single file that is minutes. For a whole server it is the recovery plan in action: the image comes back onto replacement hardware or into the cloud, and the business is working again while the cause is investigated.
CamTech’s team is on call for technical and computer emergencies, and a client with a tested recovery plan is the one who goes home on time that day.
What to expect
What a recovery plan contains
A recovery plan is a short document, and it answers questions that are easy to ask and hard to answer on the day: which systems have to come back first, where they will run if the office is unusable, who at your company makes the call, who at CamTech executes it, and how long each step takes. It names the backups each system restores from and how old that copy is allowed to be.
Writing it forces decisions that most businesses have never made. Can you work for a day without the accounting system? Can you work for an hour without email? Is there a laptop that must be restorable from anywhere? The answers set the backup schedule, the retention, and the budget, and they are different for a clinic, a contractor and a sales office.
The plan is tested, not filed. CamTech performs test restores on a schedule and records the result, so that the first time a server image is restored is not the day the server fails. The plan is reviewed when systems change, and it lives somewhere you can reach when the office network is down.
Backup and recovery questions
How often should a business back up?
Daily at a minimum, and more often for systems where an hour of lost work matters. CamTech sets the schedule per system during onboarding.
How do I know my backups would actually work?
By restoring from them. CamTech performs test restores and monitors every backup job for failures, so a problem is found on a Tuesday, not on the day you need the backup.
What is the difference between backup and disaster recovery?
A backup is a copy of your data. Disaster recovery is the plan for getting the business working again: which systems first, where they run, who does what and how long it takes.
Can ransomware encrypt my backups?
It can if they are reachable from the network it infected. CamTech keeps off-site copies separated from production and protected against deletion.
